Because when it was bought it was a powerful luxury car, it’s been built into something that’s 1 breakdown away from the junk yard.

That’s a pretty big leap of logic. If someone is willing to import a J apanese car into Finland, they’re probably not going to turn it into a heap just because they can.

Also, the term “jap” is racist as fuck.

another one people often don’ t notice is “gyp” or “gypped” as a racist term. referring to the thought that a Gypsy might cheat you.

The legislation changed couple of years ago. It’s currently very easy to import and register cars from Japan. This used to require a lot paperwork and certification issues. The cars coming outside the EU have harsher taxes and the shipping costs are quite high too but people still import these.

OK, I’m going to play devil’s advocate and propose that “Jap” is only racist in an American context (Nauraushaun is from Down Under) . Japanese Americans were actively discriminated against for being related to the WW2 Axis enemy, and ethnic Japanese were actually imprisoned in camps for years . To people in other countries it may just be an innocent shorthand.

And how the hell did the term “gypped” catch on throughout the modern US? I thought Gypsy racism was an old east coast thing back in the early 1900s. I always wondered where that term came from when I first heard it here in California.

I see your logic, but it’s been considered an epithet for a very long time now. WWII was 75 years ago.

As for how the term “gyp” moved across the States... it’s not hard to take racism on a plane. People in the US typically move more in their lifetimes that people from other countries, and they take their culture (good and bad) with them.

Forgive me if I’ve painted you in a bad light. I think maybe my previous response might have led some people to think I’m accusing you of something.

To be clear, and maybe this isn’t even necessary, but I’m absolutely not accusing you of being racist. Just pointing out that the term you used is offensive to some folks. It’s fairly commonly known that that term is taken as derogatory, but maybe not everyone knows. Maybe you didn’t.

I also have noticed that the word “rice” and associated ph rases are getting casually tossed around O ppo lately. It’s derogatory as well. Some people don’t realize that, but it is.

I think we all agree, Oppo should be a fun place for everyone to come shoot the shit about cars. Mean stuff, intended or not, is antithetical to that.

I meant only to denounce the use of the word, not to accuse anyone of being a racist. I realize that what I said was a bit vague in that regard , and I’ve commented with an apology. Reading your comment actually clued me in that what I said could be taken as an accusation.
